2008 Queensland E-learning Innovations projects

The Australian Flexible Learning Framework (Framework) provides the vocational education and training (VET) system with essential e-learning infrastructure and expertise needed to respond to the challenges of a modern economy and the training needs of Australian businesses and workers.

In 2008 Queensland (QLD) was allocated $833,000 for E-learning Innovations projects that assist RTOs to embed e-learning as a key aspect of their business strategy, focusing on:

  • business-training provider partnerships driving the integration of e-learning into business and training
  • empowering individual learners through stimulating demand, providing greater choice, responding to the needs of disadvantaged learners, and through facilitating increased RPL (recognition of prior learning).

Read details on the successful 2008 applicants.

Continue to visit this site throughout the year for updates on the progress of selected projects. Completion of E-learning Innovations projects is expected in late December 2008, with 2009 QLD funding opportunities being advertised on this page in early 2009.

The big VET Es - 24 November 2008

The big VET es was a one-day conference held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event attracted more than 200 VET professionals from public and private training sectors, universities and government agencies. Keynote speaker Jonathan Finkelstein is founder and executive producer of LearningTimes and an internationally renowned innovator and e-learning enthusiast. Jonathan energised the audience with his lively and engaging presentation. Dr Karen Becker from the Queensland University of Technology also gave a keynote presentation that gave an insight into how current workers (now needing to continue in the workforce) will need to unlearn old habits and what technologies are required to maintain currency.

The theme was e-learn. e-communicate. e-collaborate. e-innovate and were addressed by:

  • Mark Harris from Product Services, DETA, who discussed the needs of a changing workforce with the continuation of older workers (55 and above) into the workforce.
  • Brad Beach, from Gipps TAFE Victoria, who discussed e-innovative technologies that will soon be used more often in workplaces giving the audience a snapshot of how high-risk training can be assessed through virtual worlds like Second Life.
  • Allison Miller, the Framework's E-portfolios Business Manager, demonstrated e-portfolios and how they are being used in VET to meet industry and individual needs.

In addition, four of the 18 Queensland E-learning Innovations project teams presented their outcomes. These projects demonstrated the achievements of the wide variety of funded projects. Five other projects also showcased their innovative work.

Michael Coghlan, an experienced e-learning facilitator and innovator drew together the days learning's through a visual demonstration of online blogging and the benefits of twittering (#bigvetes). A real-time poll was also conducted at each session via mobile technology.
