Project summary

The Jobs for our Mob project will establish an e-training centre which incorporates technology to identify and deliver the prevocational skills required for Indigenous people wanting to enter the mining, construction or engineering fields. The project aims to assist Indigenous people from remote and very remote locations without developed work readiness skills to gain employment in these industry areas.

Myuma Pty Ltd, a non-profit corporation owned and managed by Indigenous traditional owners, has identified the need to provide pre-employment skills to Indigenous people in the north-west of Queensland as a key activity to building a sustainable community. It also identified strong collaboration with key employer groups in the area such as mining and construction companies, as a means of addressing high rates of unemployment amongst Indigenous people in the region while at the same alleviating skills shortages within these industries.

The project is a joint partnership between Mount Isa Institute of TAFE, Myuma Pty Ltd, Construction Skills Training Centre, Construction Training Queensland, the Queensland Main Roads Department and Seymour Whyte Constructions to develop an Indigenous e-training centre specialising in skills training for jobs in the mining and construction industries.

A central part of the project will be the development of high quality e-learning resources specifically designed for Indigenous learners. The resources will use language software technology, known as MARVIN, to deliver training programs with the cultural meaning of the learner. The resources developed will be adaptable and used on an ongoing basis to provide a range of qualifications from prevocational to Certificate II level.

In the future, the training models and learning resources developed through this project will have the potential to be adapted to suit the training needs of Indigenous learners in other industry areas in a high quality and culturally appropriate learning environment.
