Project Summary

It is nationally and internationally recognised that strong governance structures within Indigenous communities are crucial to building community capacity and improving social and economic conditions for Indigenous people. Indigenous communities and organisations in Australia are affected by a range of State, Territory and Commonwealth legislation and regulations which make Indigenous governance issues complex, necessitating access to high-quality governance education and training for Indigenous people.

The E-governance in Indigenous Communities project will focus on delivering education and training in governance to Indigenous communities and organisations in regional and remote communities who do not have the same level of access to governance programs as groups in other locations. The project will work with communities in New South Wales and Western Australia through video conferencing and satellite based interactive distance learning technology and e-learning resources.

The project is being run by TAFE NSW Western Institute in partnership with TAFE NSW North Coast Institute and CY O'Connor College of TAFE in Western Australia. The three participating Institutes are all challenged by the perils of distance, small communities and the need to build capacity to deliver governance programs. New technologies will enable the institutes to share and maximise teaching expertise and resources to deliver high quality governance training to communities in any geographical location.

The project will enrol 45 students in the Certificate IV in Business (Governance) program and aims to improve future employment opportunities for participants by engaging them as local facilitators, mentors and part time teachers.

The outcomes of this project will be incorporated into the core activities of the three Institutes and it is hoped they will form the basis of a high quality governance training model which can applied across Australia.
