The aim of the New Practices in Flexible Learning Project is to explore and increase the uptake of innovative, practical and sustainable approaches to e-learning in workplaces, communities and training organisations.

The New Practices in Flexible Learning Project has produced a range of projects with exciting outcomes and we want to share some of these with you.

Some of the past and current New Practices in Flexible Learning project teams developed workshop resources for their projects.  These workshops are now available as professional development opportunities on a fee for service basis, and to further enhance the sustainability of these innovative practices the resources are available here to download.

QTI m-Player

Extending the QTI Player is a project designed to further develop the 2005 New Practices QTI m-Player project.  The QTI m-Player is a free assessment application that operates on a PDA or smart phone with a mobile connection to the internet.  It enables teachers and trainers in the field to assess content, provide feedback and then upload data in a secure way.

Peter Higgs from TAFE Tasmania, the project manager of the Extending the QTI Player project, has provided workshop material. You may view the resource material or download the files by right-clicking each file and selecting "Save Target As..."

Please note that the QTI m-Player PowerPoint presentation and the Freer Farm video should be saved into a single folder in order to view the video as part of the PowerPoint presentation.

AREDv2 - the decision tree

ARED is a resource which provides templates to develop common models of interaction or 'archetypes' within e-learning resources.

ARED v1.0, developed during 2005 as a New Practices in Flexible Learning project, provided five 'archetypal' forms of media-rich interactions as 'dynamic templates'. The focus of the ARED v2 project was to extend the development of ARED v1.0 to help developers and teaching staff to develop pedagogically sound e-learning materials quickly and cost effectively. ARED v2 has added to these by providing a sixth interaction object called the Decision Tree.

Different Voices, Different Spaces

Different Voices, Different Spaces is a collection of resources that feature a 'good practice' model applied to voice technologies in teaching and learning within a range of adult
education and vocational training settings.  This collection comes out of a 2005 New Practices in Flexible Learning initiative linking an external educational mentor with three voice technology related New Practices projects.  Different Voices, Different Spaces is a portal to an exploration of the following concepts:

  • the role and significance of voice technologies in e-learning
  • the relationship between technologies and 'good educational practice'
  • the educational and social implications of specific voice technologies and
  • the place of educational mentoring.

Beyond Text: Using your voice online

This project focussed on the use of online voice tools for teaching and learning. It addressed the pedagogical barriers which prevent many teaching staff from adopting online voice tools as part of their core teaching methodology. By providing accessible models of practice the project provides teachers in the Australian vocational education and training system with a framework for moving beyond text and integrating online voice technologies for the delivery of online training.

It is expected that these new voice technologies will increase the possible application of online learning for industry and will cater for training needs not traditionally offered online. This project provides a foundation point for teachers to explore the facilitation and pedagogical issues associated with teaching online via voice tools, thus creating a mechanism for embedding further innovation within the VET sector.

ARED: applications for rapid e-learning development

Many registered training organisations and enterprises do not have the capacity to create their own educationally sound e-learning resources. This project was to research, define and develop applications for rapid e-learning development. The project produced ready-made, re-usable interactions that can be used by practitioners and developers to generate high quality, cost effective e-learning resources.

QTI m-Player: question and testing interoperability (QTI) player for mobile devices

Selected businesses and registered training organisations (RTOs) around Australia were the first in the world to use mobile learning in a secure environment. The Question and Testing Interoperability (QTI) Mobile Player (m-Player) project provided acceptance testing and proof of product for a mobile application - QTI m-Player. It allowed the vocational education and training (VET) system to create assessing instruments for teachers and trainers to test students anywhere and anytime using mobile devices.

The QTI m-Player operates on any handheld device with Windows mobile software which has access to the Internet, but learners do not have to be online when completing their assessment.

2004 Projects

Interactive Ochre: enhancing Indigenous cultural awareness among service professionals

Interactive Ochre is an interactive CD delivering an Aboriginal perspective on cultural awareness training. The application was designed as an induction package to prepare service professionals to work more effectively with Aboriginal people. However, it has been recognised as an empowering resource for Aboriginal people to tell their stories and provides an ideal opportunity for modelling equivalent intercultural partnerships. Using entertaining multimedia resources the 'new practice' demonstrates educational infotainment as a methodology.

Mobile learning: handheld innovations in flexible learning

This project examined the potential of the handheld, personal digital assistant (PDA) and its use for learning in the workplace. Its focus has been to provide new directions, opportunities and ideas for the use of PDA technology by organisations, practitioners and learners through the provision and documentation of trialled example resources and case studies.

NurseryLive!2

This project demonstrates a fully immersive online learning environment that allows trainers and learners to exist in the same simulation environment and to use chat tools within the environment. Trainers are able to deliver problem-based scenarios completely in the virtual space. Trainers are also able to extend the simulation to suit their own delivery contexts through an XML-based backend. The simulation environment is based on the production nursery developed in the 2002 Innovations in Flexible Learning project, NurseryLive!.

Just in Time Learning Assistant

This project explores new practices in online development and blended or online delivery. The project concept was to prototype a learning assistant that could complement existing and new online resources and deliver related or support content depending on how the user interacted with the original resource. For branding and end-user identity, the Just-In-Time Learning Assistant was dubbed Your Online Learning Assistant (YOLA).

The YOLA concept is demonstrated in this case with the ANTA Building and Construction Toolbox. YOLA supports this Toolbox with a range of small numeracy learning objects.
