New Practices Projects 2007

The New Practices in Flexible Learning Project is pleased to announce the successful applications for 2007. Six organisations have each been awarded funding to develop an exciting range of innovative ideas to support the promotion of flexible learning throughout Australia. The six successful projects are:

GippsTAFE and Swan TAFE

Gipps TAFE Victoria, in partnership with Swan TAFE in Western Australia will explore the concept of Immersive e-learning.  The project will look at how technology can help students deal with 'workplace risk' in a safe online environment.  For example, a healthcare student could take on the role of a character in an interactive simulation to learn how to deal with clients with challenging behaviour or drug issues.

TAFE Tasmania

Extending the QTI Player is a project designed to further develop the 2005 New Practices QTI m-Player project.  QTI Player is a free assessment application that operates on a PDA or smart phone with a mobile connection to the internet.  It enables teachers and trainers in the field to assess content, provide feedback and then upload data in a secure way.  In 2007 the QTI Player project will seek to develop the ability to export secure html e-mail, support the use of signatures and attach photographic evidence for assessment purposes.

William Angliss Institute

Turning Points is a project that will examine how young people can use mobile devices, including mobile phones and MP3 players, to download and share educational video content using new technologies such as WiFi, Bluetooth and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.

Tropical North Queensland TAFE

This project is being developed in conjunction with the Indigenous Engagement Project.  Making it Real will aim to customise existing literacy and numeracy e-resources using local images and audio so they are embraced by the community rather than seen as an external, disconnected resource.  A template will be developed to allow this process to be replicated in other communities.

Western Sydney Institute of TAFE and the Centre for Learning Innovation

The Centre For Learning Innovation along with TAFE NSW - Western Sydney Institute will investigate emerging practice in teaching and learning identified as 'social e-learning'. This practice involves using social software technologies to enhance learner engagement and learning outcomes within flexible and blended delivery. The project will research and capture successful learning models and identify pedagogical principles, strategies and issues in practice that are associated with implementing social e-learning. The research outcomes will inform the content and design of an interactive resource for VET practitioners to assist them to build their own pedagogical frameworks and evaluate the fitness of strategies and tools for successfully implementing social e-learning.
